MY POOR LITTLE GIRL!!!!

Well, after all the excitement of Bridgwater Carnival, we got home Monday afternoon and by Monday evening, Little'un was feeling a bit under the weather. At first I thought she was just wrangling for another day off although she actually loves school.

She was complaining of her limbs aching, feeling sick and having a headache, she lay on the sofa and we ended up staying up all night, (well I did! to keep a check on her) she napped on and off while I did my Bridgwater Carnival post and by morning she said she was feeling a little better and wanted to go to school.
Picking her up that afternoon, I noticed she was extremely quiet, that, for my Little'un is very strange indeed. I asked her questions about school and if anyone had upset her but she insisted she had had a good day. Anyway, when we got home she just zonked out on the sofa and slept for three hours, this I didn't bother about as we hadn't had much sleep the previous night but at around 7pm she suddenly sat up screaming! Her eyes were very glassy, I had seen this before when she was about four and knew what was coming next...... Delirium/Convulsions!
It can happen when you get an overly high temperature, unfortunately this seems to run in my side of the family and me, my big Brother and my little Sister all suffered with it. It can be caused by any kind of virus you may catch that gives you a fever, even the common cold!

To anyone who has not experienced this, it is very frightening both for the child and the parent, the poor child is in a living, waking nightmare with eyes open but not seeing anything, I was hugging her tightly and telling her "Mummy is here" but she didn't recognise me and the look of terror on her face was heartbreaking, she kept pushing me away with fear in her eyes like I was a stranger, yet kept calling out for me. She needed her temperature down fast so all the doors and windows were opened (it was freezing cold outside!). It took a while, lots of hugs and reassurance that it WAS me, before she slowly came round and realised where she was and who she was with.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION!!!
To any parent who experiences this, first of all, don't panic! Just get the child's temperature down, cold wet cloths on the pulse points works well, if you are unsure about pulse points, just wipe them all over to get them cool, it will pass, as long as the temperature is brought down. If you personally think it is lasting too long and the fever stays too high, then get them to a Hospital just to be on the safe side.

Anyway, I kept her off school today, she said she still felt a little sick, dizzy and had a bit of a headache. I checked her temperature regularly and by 6pm this evening she was back to her chatty little self and saying she felt fine and wants to go back to school tomorrow. I have written a letter to her teacher explaining what happened, to please keep a close eye on her and to ring me immediately if she sees any difference at all in Little'un. Hopefully the worst has passed, I still have no idea what triggered it off, but at least she is fine now.

Not exactly a pleasant post I know, but hopefully informative for any parent that may experience the same.

UPDATE........Friday 16 November 2007......
She is now absolutely fine and back to her normal self. Thanks for all your well wishes!

I find it quite difficult to deal with children who are ill or hurt... I feel like crying and I can't help but panic.

I had no idea that people suffered from Delirium when they had viruses. I'm glad you wrote about it, it'll give me the heads up if I'm in a similar situation one day.

I hope your little angel is okay now. xoxox

Great post and thanks for the info. Both of my kids run pretty high fevers when they get them but I have never had to deal with the other.

How awful for you both! I hope Little Un is now fully recovered.
I've read your Somerset posts and the carnival looks great fun. As for Neeza, come on over and we'll have a chat!

Oh my god,I'd never heard of this before. That's absolutely horrifying. Looking back this may have happened to me once when I was little but I snapped out of it rather quickly as far as I can remember. I really hope your little one never has to go through this again... that's absolutely horrible. You're a very good and brave woman.

OMG that was horrible. I'm so glad she's ok.
We had a similar episode when my son was around 2 or 3, he had a high temperature and started to convulse. We put him in ice cold bath water to bring the temp down and then rushed him to the hospital. Scary stuff.
Thank you for your kind comments yesterday.
